• Solver-independent 3D post-processing identifies metaparticles from contact networks. • True 3D metaparticle geometry is reconstructed from surface point clouds. • Robust size and shape descriptors avoid image analysis and virtual sieving biases. • Validation against post-processing and compression tests shows strong agreement strong agreement. • The method characterizes metaparticles formed by breakage or agglomeration.
