• An alkaline-stable Ni-MOF electrode is developed with a pyrazolylbenzene ligand. • The tetracoordinated Ni–N topology minimizes structural change in alkaline media. • The electrode shows long-term stability for at least 200 h in 1 mol/L KOH. • The OH∗ adsorption is the energy barrier in the adsorbate evolution mechanism of OER. • A model Ni-MOF is provided with an intrinsic stability for the alkaline OER study.
