A mechanical test method was developed to measure the load-dependent interfacial coefficients of friction for pairs of materials. Models rely on these contact properties to predict relative movements and load transfer in accident or impact scenarios. Due to the complexity of the underlying mechanisms, friction coefficients are often determined empirically. Traditional tribometer-type measurements are usually smaller scale idealized contacts. These approaches do not accurately mimic the performance of larger scale contact applications, leading to the development of this experimental method. Multiple hydraulic actuators were used in tandem with custom fixtures to examine the various material interfaces used in an electronics encapsulation architecture and in a protective shipping container. Sufficient control of alignment and contact was achieved with direct measurement of the coefficient of friction as a function of normal load. This novel test method is less dependent on material type and can determine friction at various velocities and normal forces in many applications.
