• A multifunctional medical flame-retardant polyurethane was prepared. • The PLP-Gd coordination architecture successfully shifted the decomposition process from the generation of low-molecular-weight gaseous products toward the formation of higher-molecular-weight condensed-phase species. • While simultaneously integrating multiple functionalities, the mechanical properties of the polyurethane were also enhanced. .
