Abstract

Abstract

En 中文
The development of unconventional oil and gas resources increasingly relies on long horizontal wells, where coiled tubing (CT) is a key enabler for efficient intervention operations. However, as horizontal sections extend beyond 3000 m, CT operations encounter a fundamental “reach capability” challenge — namely, lock-up caused by friction and helical buckling. Existing reviews have focused on isolated technical aspects or single operation types, leaving a gap for an integrated framework that covers the entire “surface–string–downhole–digital” chain. To fill this gap, this paper constructs and elaborates a full-chain technology system for enhancing CT reach capability, organized into three interconnected stages (Input, Transmission, Output) with a cross-cutting digital enabling layer. Key technological advances are systematically reviewed, including surface equipment and string enhancement, chemical and mechanical friction reduction, wellbore cleaning optimization, downhole intelligence, and digital control. Based on representative global field cases, a reach capability limit database is compiled and five efficient technology collaboration patterns are identified. The analysis shows that breakthroughs in reach capability depend on multi-technology synergy and digital empowerment, shifting operations from “experience-driven” toward “predictive and adaptive” modes. This paper not only provides optimized technology pathways for different operational objectives (e.g., ultra-long milling, low-pressure cleanouts, extreme environment interventions) but also outlines future R&D frontiers. The work aims to offer systematic strategic guidance for both academic research and industrial practice in CT reach enhancement.
