Working model of S-dependent Fe stress integration in durum wheat. S availability acts as the main factor defining the metabolic and transcriptional state of the plant, whereas Fe mainly affects the intensity of these responses. This is particularly evident for OAS, methionine, citrate and asparagine, which accumulated most strongly under combined S and Fe deficiency and progressively decreased as Fe availability increased. The coordinated behavior of these compounds, together with their association with S assimilation and Fe-homeostasis genes, highlights a coordinated root-centered network that integrates S and Fe nutrition.
