Abstract

• HS− oxidation experiments were conducted at pH 8. • 88.6 ± 1.1% of sulfate oxygen derived from dissolved O2 during abiotic HS− oxidation. • This fraction exceeds the 75% value predicted by the abiotic HS− oxidation model. • Most sulfate likely formed via pathways bypassing sulfite or bisulfite intermediates. • The apparent 18εSO4−O2 value was determined to be −12.2 ± 0.7‰.
