A high-performance terbium-based metal-organic framework for efficient sensing of nitrophenol isomers

Nitrophenol isomers are typical priority environmental pollutants with high toxicity, poor biodegradability, and strong persistence. Herein, a terbium-based metal-organic framework (NKU-70) was synthesized via a one-step method with dual ligands. Benefiting from the efficient antenna effect, NKU-70 exhibits green luminescence from Tb3+, along with excellent chemical stability. NKU-70 shows luminescent sensing toward o-nitrophenol (o-NP), m-nitrophenol (m-NP), and p-nitrophenol (p-NP) in a wide concentration range, with superior sensitivity and ultra-trace detection performances. Moreover, NKU-70 possesses promising sensing properties, including rapid response, good cyclic stability, and strong anti-interference ability against common environmental interferents. Mechanistic studies confirm that the luminescent sensing is dominated by competitive absorption and photoinduced electron transfer between nitrophenols and organic ligands. Collectively, this work not only provides NKU-70 as a reliable and practical luminescent sensing material for the ultra-trace detection of nitrophenol isomers, but also gains insights into the design and application of lanthanide MOFs in environmental monitoring.
