Multiple elevation beam (MEB) technology operating at spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is a promising candidate for achieving high-resolution and ultrawide-swath (HRWS) images. In combination with intrapulse beamsteering on transmit, it would be much more flexible than the traditional single-beam classical SAR system unless range ambiguities and sensitivity can be effectively suppressed and improved. In this letter, an innovative HRWS system architecture, as well as the underlying signal processing for 2-D multichannel SAR, is proposed based on the MEB imaging mode in combination with the intrapulse beamsteering and digital beamforming (IMEB-DBF) on receive in elevation. A system design operating at IMEB-DBF mode over a 200 km swath with 1.0 m azimuth resolution is shown. A simulation experiment validates the effectiveness of the proposed processing procedure, which has great potential to significantly improve the capabilities and performance of future SAR systems and missions. Finally, a discussion on terrain variation and bandpass filter design for IMEB-DBF imaging mode is provided.
