• The effect of uniaxial stretching on performance of PBIs was studied. • Stretching induced microphasic separation in NPBI/PA@30% membrane. • The proton conductivity and mechanical properties increased with stretching ratio. • The PPD of NPBI/PA@30% MEA exhibited 687.5 mW cm−2 at 160 °C.
