• A mesoporous tape casted γ-LiAlO2 matrix was prepared for higher MCFC performance. • An optimal and eco-friendly slurry was developed for mesoporous matrix synthesis. • The Hansen solubility theory was applied for optimizing the slurry formulation. • The mesoporous matrix showed high electrochemical performance in small cell tests. • The new matrix promoted a fast ion transport comparable to superionic conductors.
