• A multi-energy X-ray transmission method was developed for metal identification. • Three energy regions were defined for classification and thickness analysis. • A CdTe photon-counting detector acquired full-spectrum transmission data. • The method accurately identified Al, Fe, and Cu across wide thickness ranges. • ME-XRT outperformed DE-XRT in identifying metals with similar atomic numbers.
