A new interactive multiscale method combining the FE2 method with K-means++ clustering algorithm is proposed for progressive failure analysis of composite laminates in this paper. The multiscale computational framework is established based on the homogenization theory, progressive failure analysis method and K-means++ clustering algorithm. Integrating with the multiscale progressive damage model which contains the damage initiation criteria, damage evolution law and constitutive models, the multiscale progressive failure analysis method is developed and implemented. This method has both good computational accuracy and acceptable computational efficiency, which also simultaneously considers the microscopic intralaminar fiber and matrix damage modes and macroscopic interlaminar delamination damage mode. Good agreement has been achieved between the numerical and experimental results of the macroscopic load-displacement response and multiscale failure mechanisms of notched composite laminates under tension. The maximum relative deviation between the simulation and experimental results is 3.19 %, demonstrating validity of the developed multiscale progressive failure analysis method. The K value in K-means++ clustering algorithm has relatively small effect on the simulation results but significant effect on the computational time. From the simulation results, matrix damage firstly initiates around the central notch in the 45°, 90° and 0° layers successively. Meanwhile, interlaminar delamination damage firstly initiates and mainly propagates in the 45°/0° interfaces. The final failure is mainly controlled by the initiation and propagation of fiber damage in the 0° layers.
