Abstract

Abstract

Various control techniques have been reported in the literature to mitigate harmonic current distortion in power systems using shunt active power filters (SAPFs). Among the different configurations, the three-leg inverter topology is the most widely adopted due to its simplicity and effectiveness. In this configuration, both direct and indirect control methods can be applied. However, most existing approaches rely on phase-locked loops (PLLs) and low-pass filters (LPFs), leading to increased computational complexity, dependence on synchronization units, and higher implementation cost. Moreover, LPFs often introduce phase delays that deteriorate the dynamic performance, especially under transient operating conditions. This paper proposes a simplified indirect control strategy for harmonic current compensation in a three-wire grid using a three-phase SAPF. The proposed approach employs a new multi-variable filter for fundamental current extraction with a reduced number of current sensors, thereby eliminating the need for PLLs and LPFs. The effectiveness of the proposed method is validated through MATLAB/Simulink simulations and controller hardware-in-the-loop (CHIL) experiments using a real-time digital simulator and a TMS320F28379D digital signal processor. The results demonstrate a significant reduction in grid current total harmonic distortion, from double-digit values to below 5%, in compliance with IEEE Std. 519.
