• An A. hydrophila phage pAEh1 was isolated and its biological characteristics were comprehensively investigated. • Phage pAEh1 exhibited strong antibacterial activity against A. hydrophila in vitro. • Phage pAEh1 significantly improved the survival of grass carp infected with A. hydrophila. • Phage pAEh1 carried no resistance genes or virulence-related genes.
