This article presents a novel nonisolated bidirectional buck-boost dc-dc converter without employing a transformer or coupled inductor. An active switched inductor network is integrated into the front-end section of a modified SEPIC converter, facilitating a wide voltage conversion ratio while reducing voltage stress on the major switches. The proposed converter offers multifunctional capabilities, enabling seamless integration with photovoltaic (PV) systems, battery storage, and dc grids. The battery can be charged either from the PV system or directly from the dc grid, enhancing system flexibility. Furthermore, synchronous rectification is implemented using complementary switching to improve conversion efficiency. The steady-state analysis is presented for both continuous conduction mode and discontinuous conduction mode. A dynamic model of the converter is developed, and its performance is validated under both open-loop and closed-loop conditions using SiC mosfets. Experimental results verify the enhanced performance and practicality of the proposed converter for energy storage systems in dc grids, electric vehicles, and other industrial power conversion applications.
