• A method has been developed to prepare NbCxOy through hydrogen-rich reduction. • The formation mechanism of NbCxOy was clarified in CH4-H2 atmosphere. • The synthesis temperature and time of NbCxOy is reduced. • NbCxOy has excellent conductivity and electrochemical dissolution performance.
