Residential relocation plays a crucial role in shaping land-use planning and is significant for policymakers in planning sustainable and liveable communities. This research delves into the intricate questions of 'when,' 'why,' and 'where' households choose to relocate, employing a methodological approach. Conventional models in this field fail to capture the full dynamic nature of household decision-making over the life course. This article introduces a methodologically advanced framework for modelling residential relocation using dynamic discrete choice modelling (DDCM) that combines the forward-looking nature of DDCM with the capabilities of classical models, allowing for the integration of past, present, and future factors in decision-making processes. The DDCM framework is a crucial asset for understanding household relocation trends over time, particularly during evolving economic, household, and city characteristics. Furthermore, this framework addresses the critical yet frequently overlooked interplay between residential and job relocations, offering a more complete picture of real- world decision-making dynamics. The efficacy of the framework is demonstrated using data from the Household, Income, and Labor Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) survey in Sydney. This study critically examines the role of housing affordability in shaping relocation choices, providing actionable insights that contribute to understanding residential decision-making with implications for land-use and transportation policy.
