The academic reappraisal of the history of institutionalised children in Germany has gained new momentum in recent years thanks to the increased public involvement of those affected and interdisciplinary research approaches. The article examines how this group contributes significantly to the thematisation of violence and abuse in care homes and how they are actively involved in current research projects. It highlights the opportunities and challenges of increasingly interdisciplinary reappraisal research, which attempts to involve the former children in care not only as eyewitnesses, but also as equal co-researchers. Tensions exist between academia and those affected with regard to methodological approaches, power imbalances and media representation.
