Abstract

Abstract

Carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) is a pivotal technology for achieving deep decarbonization. Within CCUS deployment, source-sink matching is crucial for determining system feasibility and cost-effectiveness. This review comprehensively examines CCUS source-sink matching research at global and national scales, focusing on the spatial relationships among major emission sources, geological storage capacity, transport infrastructure, and overall system cost optimization. Representative source-sink matching models are systematically compared with respect to their emission reduction targets, source and sink characterization methods, and pipeline network optimization approaches, highlighting their respective applications and limitations. Building on this global perspective, the study focuses on China and provides an in-depth analysis of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA). By integrating regional emission profiles with offshore geological storage potential, a tailored source-sink matching framework for the GBA is developed, accompanied by a proposed technical roadmap and evaluation system. This work offers a systematic reference to guide CCUS planning and deployment in the GBA and other comparable coastal urban agglomerations worldwide.
