Abstract

• Sukhothai Permo-Triassic deposits tectono-strat. settings revised to reflect changing plate convergence and collision conditions. • The Sukhothai Terrane developed prior to Carboniferous independently from Indochina. • Just prior to collision (240–250 Ma) plate acceleration caused volcanic flair up in Sukhothai and Indochina arcs. • Complex, long (>150 Ma), Nan Ocean history indicates it is not a simple back-arc basin. • Sukhothai Terrane-Sibumasu collision c. 235 Ma, Norian extensional collapse and soft collision (c. 205 Ma) with Indochina.
