• Au-ZnO/ZnO-SnO2 dual-heterojunction achieves 4064 µmol·g-1·h-1 C2H6 with 83.7% CH4 coupling selectivity. • ZnO-SnO2 boosts charge separation; Au-ZnO facilitates electron transfer and methyl desorption; SnO2 enhances CH4 adsorption. • In situ DRIFTS/ESR identify O2⁻ as key for CH4 activation; DFT confirms low-energy methyl coupling. • Tandem heterojunction design enables efficient photocatalytic CH4-to-C2H6 conversion.
