A Study on the FEM Procedure and Methodology of an Open-Source Program

Abstract

The product design process increasingly relies on virtual verification of designs using computer-aided design (CAD) through computer-aided engineering (CAE) analysis, a widely recognized approach. In this context, open-source programs have garnered significant attention, as expensive commercial CAE programs often impose a substantial financial burden on users. Similar to commercial programs, open-source finite element method (FEM) programs must select between implicit or explicit analysis based on the linearity/non-linearity of materials and boundary conditions. The primary verification metrics typically include stress, displacement, and computational time. This study describes the criteria for choosing implicit or explicit analysis based on the linearity/non-linearity of materials and boundary conditions, and introduces the functional capabilities and supplementary points for nonlinear analysis in KIMM-Structure, an open-source FEM program. Finally, the reliability of the analysis was assessed through a case comparison with Abaqus, a widely used commercial program.
