• Self-generated amphiphilic urea intermediates stabilize the emulsion without external surfactants. • Rapid interfacial polymerization of IPDI with DETA enables microcapsule formation within the emulsion stability period. • The post-reaction aqueous phase can be directly recycled by pH adjustment. • The emulsifier-free, water-recyclable strategy shows good generality for non-polar phase change materials.
