• A thermoresponsive additive (mCF3-BA) is developed for high-energy lithium batteries • mCF3-BA improves cycling stability at normal operation by forming robust SEI/CEI layers • When hot-abused, mCF3-BA polymerizes into an insulating thermoset resin rapidly • The threshold temperature of thermal runaway is raised to over 180°C
