• A universal method is proposed for nonlinear reduction of complex shell structures. • Complex shell structures are mapped and parameterized within parametric planes. • Modes and modal derivatives are accurately computed within parametric planes. • Nonlinear model reduction is performed for shell structure in the parametric plane. • For non-planar shell structures, modal reduction is enabled by optimal SCM.
