• A new variable-thickness geometrically exact shell element with a five-parameter extensible director field is developed. • The underlying kinematics is consistently constructed within the framework of the five-parameter extensible director. • Kinematics enabled by the five‑parameter extensible director inherently alleviates thickness locking. • The formulation enables direct use of full 3D hyperelastic constitutive models without plane‑stress assumptions. • The proposed formulation offers superior accuracy, robustness, and convergence for hyperelastic materials.
