• A novel method for force identification with unknown initial conditions is proposed. • Initial conditions-induced free vibration is seen as virtual force-induced vibration. • Handling unknown initial conditions is transformed into virtual force identification. • The proposed method is validated by numerical simulation and experiment. • The proposed method is relatively easy to implement using experimental data.
