The use of Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) components presents a great promise, as well as challenges and risks. In this paper, we describe our ongoing research on developing adaptable software architectures using COTS components. In particular, we describe an Adaptable COTS-Aware Software Architecting (ACASA) framework that addresses the concerns of the various stakeholders of the proposed system in the presence of COTS components, with a special emphasis on adaptability as a nonfunctional requirement. The ACASA framework is illustrated by way of a telepresence system example. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
