• Methamphetamine (METH)-induced dopaminergic sensitization is influenced by metabolic state. • Insulin signaling modulates DAT activity and psychostimulant effects. • Acute food deprivation reduces insulin levels and decreases METH-induced locomotor sensitization. • Food deprivation lowers glucose and insulin levels and reduces Akt phosphorylation.
