Single-cell protein (SCP) is a sustainable, high-quality protein source known for its high-protein content and a well-balanced amino acid profile. This Review provides a comprehensive overview of substrates used for SCP production, including soluble carbon sources, gaseous substrates, and organic wastewater. It also explores the variety of microbial species employed in SCP production, such as yeast, bacteria, fungi, and microalgae, alongside the associated production processes. Additionally, the feasibility of SCP as both an animal feed and a potential substitute for human-grade protein is evaluated. A particular focus is given to organic wastewater as a substrate for SCP production with specific examples including brewery wastewater, aquaculture effluent, and domestic sewage. The review highlights the dual benefits of using wastewater for SCP production, offering both effective wastewater treatment and valuable protein production. This underscores the potential of SCP as a sustainable alternative to traditional protein sources, opening new opportunities for both protein production and environmental sustainability.
