• Aerodynamic drag coefficients of plant-covered grids are measured in wind tunnel experiments. • A four-parameter model is proposed to estimate wind drag on vegetated grids of arbitrary geometry. • The model is validated through a case study of a curved gridshell tested in a second wind tunnel experiment. • A drag-equivalent net is characterized, with a wind drag comparable to a dense cover of climbing plants.
