• Individual differences in affiliation aid understanding of interpersonal function. • Trait affiliation is interstitial between aspects of Agreeableness and Extraversion. • Trait affiliation predicts friendship goals and experiencing more positive events. • Trait affiliation is positively associated with social cognitive ability. • This interstitial trait facilitates integration of the Big Five and IPC frameworks.
