• Chronic social isolation (SI) induces significant behavioral deficits in rats. • SI elevates IL-1β and NF-κB mRNA levels in the prefrontal cortex (PFC). • Agmatine (AGM) treatment effectively reverses SI-induced behavioral deficits. • Agmatine attenuates the SI-induced elevation of IL-1β and NF-κB in the PFC.
