Alternative Process Technologies to Recover Acetic Acid from Its Aqueous Mixture

Acetic acid (AcOH) is an important chemical with a large number of applications. It forms aqueous and nonaqueous mixtures. The industrial requirement is 99.9 w% AcOH. This review presents important aspects of various processes to recover AcOH from aqueous mixtures: different distillations, liquid-liquid extraction, adsorption, membrane separation, and reactive separation. Inlet and obtained AcOH concentration, percent recovery, advantages/disadvantages, possibility of combination of these technologies with other technologies i.e. hybrid separations are examined including techno-economic considerations. Modeling, simulation and ecological considerations are briefly discussed and a possible guide for selection of technology is provided. Directions for future work are proposed: use of ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents, heat integration, and hybrid separations on an industrial scale while using reactive separation, extractive distillation, and liquid-liquid extraction.
