Background There have been many changes that may impact the training received by trainee Gynaecologists working in Ireland. We hoped to show that there remains ample opportunity to upskill in gynaecology surgery, appropriate for all levels of trainees. Aims To audit the surgeries being performed in our unit, what level of trainees were scrubbed for cases, and assess who were the primary surgeons. Methods This was a retrospective audit of all surgeries performed in Cork University Maternity Hospital over a 6-month period, excluding obstetric cases. We audited the doctors scrubbed for cases, and their level of training. We also audited the level of complexity of the surgery performed using a modified classification system used by the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Results 862 procedures were performed in this 6-month time period that met inclusion criteria. Consultants as a group performed the most surgeries as primary(386), however the majority of surgeries in total were performed by Non-Consultant Hospital Doctors. Senior trainees were more likely to be primary surgeon as the surgical complexity increases. Conclusions This audit sheds light on the volume of surgeries performed in a large gynaecology unit, and the opportunities provided to trainees to gain the necessary surgical skills in in gynaecology. We encourage other units to perform similar studies and repeat over timepoints to confirm that training opportunities remain available to doctors at all levels of training.
