• We study the problem of packing rectangles into a circular container. • We propose an improved decoding procedure. • We introduce an evolutionary search algorithm based on the new decoding procedure. • We design two population initialization methods and a new crossover operator. • The algorithm improves the best-known results for 53 benchmark instances.
