Abstract

This work presents an effective material approach for the eddy current problem in electromagnetic shields which allows to replace the thin geometry with an interface in the finite element mesh, leading to less degrees of freedom and better conditioned finite element systems. Contrary to many similar methods it does not require any additional unknowns inside the shield, replacing the eddy current problem with an effective stationary field problem on the outside domain. The effective material is obtained by solutions of cheap one dimensional cell problems. It can be calculated independent of the geometry in a precomputation phase and stored efficiently for later use. Despite using only a magnetic scalar potential, conductive effects and losses inside the shield are considered in the model. The method is shown to achieve a high accuracy both locally and globally, even for nonlinear materials, in a low frequency example.
