Traditional radar-cross-section (RCS) estimation of a target using a near-field sampling scheme usually needs to probe the scattering electric fields on a spherical surface or a plane, which is time consuming. To improve the testing efficiency, a novel lineal sampling method is proposed in this letter. This method can significantly reduce the amount of data required and shorten the test time. First, the relation between scattering near-field and far-field is derived on the basis of physical optics theory. According to the obtained relation, the near-field to far-field transformation formulas is given. Finally, simulations and experiments are carried out to verify the presented method. The results also show that the proposed method can acquire the RCS of a target efficiently and accurately.
