• A novel grouping method for large wind farms is proposed. • A computationally efficient optimization algorithm for active yaw control of wind farms is proposed. • The proposed algorithm can simultaneously maximize the power output and minimize the turbine load. • The proposed algorithm only takes 1 s to optimize the yaw angles of 75 wind turbines.
