Abstract

• Our study systematically identified 26 different activities during the development process of Blockchain-Based Software (BBS). These tasks span the various development phases: Analysis, Design, Implementation, Deployment, and Execution and Maintenance. • We empirically investigated the importance of these tasks with 102 practitioners. Our findings revealed a statistically significant difference (p-value <.001) in the importance ratings for all but two tasks: incentive protocol design and granularity design. Additionally, participants suggested the inclusion of tasks such as cost analysis and risk assessment. • Our study provides a framework that serves as a guideline for senior managers to anticipate activities in BBS development, a checklist for software teams to assess and enhance their development approach, and a tool for evaluating alternative methodologies. It also supports software process improvement and can be applied to other computing paradigms.
