• The first octree-based implicit Generalised Interpolation Material Point Method. • Discrete GIMP basis formulation enables a single non-conforming octree mesh. • Background mesh and material points automatically adapt based on contact interface. • Small-cut instability mitigated by extending ghost stabilisation to octree meshes. • Up to 20 times reduction in CPU-hrs compared to conventional meshes.
