• The XGBOOST classification method based on improved tuna swarm optimization algorithm is proposed. • The tuna swarm optimization algorithm demonstrates its superiority on seven different functions. • The results demonstrate that the proposed method significantly outperforms other methods in both the highest accuracy and the F1. • The proposed model effectively enables reliable food safety risk level evaluation.
