• A feasibility study on the passive sump recirculation was carried out for the HPR1000 three-loop nuclear power plant for the first time. Design improvements of the HPR1000 plant were implemented to meet the safety criteria for long-term cooling, which can provide a reference for the development of other nuclear power plants. • Long-term cooling analyses were conducted for different break compartments, providing a quantitative evaluation of the effects of flooding water level and debris resistance at the core inlet. • A series of long-term cooling analysis for phases beyond 72 h following a LOCA was conducted in the study and the need for containment makeup water was eliminated, providing a basis for the simplification of the engineered safety features.
