Background: From the perspective of complex network theory, the automotive industry is a critical research object due to its highly intricate supply chain structure. This study explores the structural characteristics and resilience of the automotive supply chain, with a focus on key issues such as resource transfer efficiency, control of core resources, and the impact of unexpected events on the industrial chain. Methods: Supplier-customer data for 155 automotive enterprises were obtained from the Bloomberg Supply Chain Database to construct automotive supply chain networks for 2018 and 2021. Network structures were analyzed at both node-level and overall scales. An enterprise importance evaluation model integrating the entropy weight method and TOPSIS methods was employed to identify the critical firms. Correlation and comparative analyses were then conducted to examine changes in network structural characteristics between 2018 and 2021. Results: The automotive industry supply chain network exhibits very low density, indicating limited efficiency in resource transfer. Certain foreign enterprises control core resources within the automotive industry chain, while domestic automotive enterprises have gradually risen, leading to the formation of industrial cluster aggregation effects. In response to unexpected events, the overall industrial chain shows a tendency to evolve toward greater distance from end markets and reduced supply chain relations. Conclusions: This study reveals key characteristics and evolutionary trends of the automotive supply chain network, including low resource transfer efficiency, the coexistence of foreign dominance in core resources and the growth of domestic enterprises, the emergence of industrial clusters, and structural adjustments under external shocks. Based on these findings, targeted recommendations are proposed at both governmental and enterprise levels to optimize the automotive supply chain, enhance network resilience, improve resource allocation efficiency, and promote the sustainable development of the domestic automotive industry.
