Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the relationship between water consumption and the generation of solid waste. A different approach was used to achieve this goal, through a quantile regression model for panel data with fixed effects, estimated using the generalized method of moments. The results show that the relationship between water consumption and waste generation extrapolates the results of conditional mean models (conventional multiple linear regression). The estimated model also identified heterogeneous effects among the distribution quantiles of the dependent variable, indicating that the association between the variables is stronger in the upper part of the distribution. These results allow for better planning of the construction of the tariff structure by regulatory agencies, which, if combined with other factors, can improve the proposed model for any municipality.
