• Ostrich eggshells are important for taxonomy and reconstructing past ecosystems. • Pore patterns resembling that of Somali and Syrian ostrich were found. • Pore morphology indicates species turnover in the southern Levant between 100 and 70 ka. • Changes in pore patterns also reflect broader climatic changes. • The findings clarify the ecological history of the region.
