Ovarian cancer ascites can blunt T cell attack, but the earliest steps affected have remained unclear. In this issue of Nature Metabolism, Brown et al. show that ascites-derived lipids disrupt T cell receptor organization and early activation, revealing a synaptic barrier to immunity.
