• Large variability in nitrogen source pressure at field scale is not apparent at the farm scale • “Subzones” of the total farm area have disproportional differences in surplus N values • Dairy fields have the highest NBAL of the three subzones on average • Grassland management factors not significant for N at field scale • Long-term N management strategies (3 to 5 year) may be more effective than annual planning
