Assessing the equity and efficiency of crop and livestock-related agricultural greenhouse gas emissions contributes to achieving regionally differentiated emission mitigation

Abstract

Understanding China's agricultural greenhouse gas (GHG) balance and equitable mitigation is critical for achieving sustainability. This study quantifies provincial agricultural net GHG emissions for 2000-2021, focusing on crop planting and livestock breeding sectors (excluding forestry and fisheries). We accounting for CO2 and non-CO2 sources, and crop carbon sequestration across 31 provinces using emission factors. A novel framework, utilizing ecological support coefficient (ESC) and economy contributive coefficient (ECC) was employed to evaluate inter-provincial equity and efficiency. Results from trend analysis (Mann-Kendall test) confirmed a statistically significant downward trend in net emissions (Z = -6.09,p < 0.001), with an average annual reduction of 44.29 MtCO(2)-eq (Sen's slope). Furthermore, Pettitt's test identified 2010 as a significant structural breakpoint (p < 0.001). Methane (CH4) dominated emissions (44.51%), mainly from enteric fermentation and rice paddies; planting activities contributed more than livestock (65.95%). Spatially, emissions showed a distinct pattern of higher levels in the east and lower in the west. Equity is higher in northern provinces, while efficiency is superior in southern regions. These insights provide a robust foundation for provincial reduction priorities, informing differentiated, equitable, and efficient agricultural climate mitigation strategies for China.
